A Fan fiction and the pain it put me through

"The Inheritance Cycle".... This has been a story that has fascinated me. I have read some 15 or so novels in English and this I daresay is among the closest to my heart. One reason: it is fantasy. I love fantasy more than anything. It takes me to another world. It makes me live among the people in the false-world. No! not false world. It is my world in the times that I read fantasies. Be it Harry Potter or Lord of the rings or Inheritance. Inheritance is not yet finished though. (As on 9/7/2010). I had read all the first three books of the series: Eragon, Eldest & Brisingr. I was awaiting the fourth with longing. I wanted to finish reading the fourth one as soon as possible. The waiting that Paolini put me through was too much. So I turned back to the first three books and read them again and the end of the read, my thirst had not quenched. It had only increased. So I turned my attention to fan-fictions and there were quite a lot. I read them. They were not well written. I hadn't expected them to be. There were dark tales, romantic tales and all. Then at last my eyes fell upon Eldunari by wildskysong alias Kallie in fanfiction.net. This seemed to be a neatly formed story. Had its own dark spots: Eragon's capture and the sort. But it was lovable. I liked reading it mainly because of the way the author handled Arya's feelings for Eragon and Eragon's dealing with Galbatorix. I thought it may finally quench my thirst. But alas, by the end I was cursing the writer much more than I was adoring her story at the middle part of Eldunari: She had killed Eragon. Just because she wanted Murtagh to be the rider's leader. I liked Murtagh's character. He was a real hero. But once he killed Hrothgar, all was gone. I finally started hating him after that: but no!!, I couldn't. He was such a fiercely good natured guy that hating him was impossible. But Eragon is different. He is "the hero". He can't die. He simply can't die....... The girl(wildskysong) has started some sequel named Edoc' sil to her Eldunari and had hinted eragon's resurrection using a phoenix feather at the end of Eldunari and the blasted Edoc' sil has just begun and now I am in deep distress. But I know something better.... I made Eragon live in my own version of the last two chapters of Eldunari. After all it is a fan-fiction of a fantasy: a world that I can make on my own.

Update as on 10/7/2010: The Second chapter of Edoc' sil is published and I can't stop reading it even though there was no Eragon. But the title characters are: Erogon & Arya and 40 chapters or so remain to be finished. So no doubt, Eragon is to be resurrected. But what catches me off-guard and makes me read this is the quality of the writing: it is nearly commercially publishable (at least up to me).

Update as on 26/9/2010: But when the author goes on about elves aren't supposed to feel 'emotions', it is a bit annoying because Arya herself has said that Elves do have feelings just as humans & dwarves: they are only too good at concealing it most of the times. But obviously the author hasn't got that point across from the constant reminders she gives about 'elves who aren't supposed to feel like humans' but nevertheless I still recommend you read it for the quality of the writing.
Further, both stories: Eldunari & Edoc'sil, have a more 'hero-ish' role for Murtagh than both Eragon & Arya and the 'hero' image of Murtagh has been increasing steadily into Edoc'sil and it seems like she is taking him toward Martyrdom of the highest order. All this is pushing the importance and image of Eragon and Arya in the southernly direction. So all those who want really great Eragon & Arya stuff can read Empire, Eridor and Ending. It has the best Eragon/Arya stuff going around and I bet even the real author ,Paolini, is going to have difficulty in beating it in that respect. The only drawback that it has for people who have read Brisingr is that it follows Eldest and so doesn't have 'heart of heart' stuff.

Update as on 24/10/2011: Edoc'sil is great!!! Almost perfect even. I loved it. It is only into the 28th chapter and there are about 15-20 more chapters to go but I can see how good it is going to be.

Yours, Lone Voyager.

  1. Hi!  This is wildskysong!  Um, surprise?  I just wanted to thank you for sticking with Edoc'sil, even if you didn't/don't like the direction it's headed in.  It really means a lot to me <3

And, um, sorry for kind of popping in on you like this.  I usually don't creep like this.

  2. Umm... not so sure how I feel about this. I have blasted you and commended you and done it all in this sort of review. But I need you to know that nothing was personal and that I just am stumped by your ingenuity and incredibility that I am considering keeping your story saved on my computer as my 'official' Inheritance(Book 4). You are that good.

  3. Aha, I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable.  That was not my intention.

It's totally okay!  Your criticism is great!  I love criticism like this.  It helps me grow and learn as a writer.

What got me was that, even though you didn't like me killing Eragon, you still read on anyway.  That's awesome.  :D

I totally understand that it's not personal. ;)  Thank you so much!  I'm so honored to have readers like you.

And, um, I'm very sorry to have put you through so much distress.  I killed Eragon for a reason, I promise!
