Eragon - Arya & Aragorn -Arwen |
Love in Books - almost always gets thrashed - but, occasionally is seen as the guideline for real-life love. And even rarely, it gets Epic status and stands tall, taller than even real-life love stories. One such 'epic' tales is Aragorn - Arwen of the Lord of the rings. This pairing attained such high proportions because of the fact that Arwen relinquished her immortality for the sake of living 'a life time' with Aragorn. And it really is a master stroke by JRR Tolkien. I myself, is an ardent worshipper of this pairing. In fact, my google homepage background image is that of Aragorn & Arwen from Peter Jackson's LOTR films. Theirs is really a fascinating tale. One love story in which everybody wants to be involved in. Well, maybe not, but it is one story in which I want to be part of.
And then there is Eragon - Arya of the Inheritance cycle. It is in more than one way similar to Aragorn & Arwen (Really, its not just the similarity in names). But it constantly gets thrashed at by people. One reason that people give constantly in opposition to this pairing is that Arya is way too much older for Eragon. I would like to remind that Arwen was atleast 2600 years older than Aragorn. In reality this age difference has no bearing on their relationship for Aragorn and Eragon's worlds are so different from ours that comparisons of age don't really matter in their worlds. Let us take the LOTR story, for example: Éowyn was intended by Tolkien to be Aragorn's love interest at first; but then he decided against it for Aragorn was "too old and lordly and grim" for Éowyn. But if you see Aragorn, Arwen and Éowyn's ages you will feel that Éowyn was 'suitable' for Aragorn than Arwen. But in the context of the story it is different. But again in the story, it was Aragorn who falls for Arwen at first sight when he was only 20. Arwen doesn't reciprocate his love at that time. She loves him only after he became a wise & grim lord of 49. As you can guess, 20 or 49 don't have any bearing for one as old as Arwen Undómiel, only the change that had happened to Aragorn mattered; he looked like an elf-lord.
If one was to analyze Eragon & Arya's story, you can see that it has striking similarities with the tale of Aragorn & Arwen. Eragon loves Arya at first sight. Arya doesn't love him then. Eragon matures slowly. Arya seems to have developed feelings for Eragon (in Brisingr). Isn't the outline just the same as that of Aragorn and Arwen's story? But the 'expanded' tale in the books isn't as poetic as it sounds in the outline. Eragon's advances are rejected by Arya twice in the books(in Eldest). But wake up to the reality, will real life encounters be as poetic as the outline. Surely NO!!.
People don't like Eragon / Arya relationship for two reasons:
1) They don't accept them due to the age difference.
2) They feel that Arya has been too harsh toward Eragon.
But as it is, their age difference doesn't really matter for both are immortal and thus are more 'suited' for each other than even Aragorn and Arwen were to each other. But such comparisons are idiotic if you know what I mean. But the point that I want to make clear is that if and when Eragon matures into a 'grim lord', he will become absolutely suitable for Arya. And Arya hasn't been exactly 'harsh' to Eragon. She has rejected his advances, yes, but she has clearly said that she likes Eragon's company.(I have gone into the details about this in these posts: Defending the Inheritance Cycle & Explaining Arya).
As I have explained, I really don't see anything that suggests that Eragon and Arya should not end up together. But it remains to be seen how Christopher Paolini goes about their tale in the Book IV of the Inheiritance Cycle. It is the way he makes their story in that book that will give their story the "Epic" tag as he said in the first book, Eragon: "An epic romance is in your future, extraordinary, as the moon indicates—for that is a magical symbol—and strong enough to outlast empires." And for my life, I pray that Paolini does a good job for I really want it to be 'Epic'.
I haven't said exactly why I like the Eragon - Arya pairing now, have I? I love their pairing because their story goes on like a Real-life experience rather than the Poetic bookish love.
